Alekain Foundation
Girls and young women in Afghanistan face profound barriers to education. Education for girls past 6th grade has been made illegal. This reality calls for steady action, shared responsibility, and a global commitment to support girls’ right to learn.
Alekain is a U.S.-based nonprofit that expands access to accredited high school education for girls in Afghanistan who have been denied access to school. Through a comprehensive model that includes academic instruction, mentorship, mental-health support, English preparation, and essential technology, Alekain equips scholars with the tools they need to earn a high school diploma and pursue higher education. Guided by a belief in dignity, safety, and possibility, we help girls continue their learning—and build brighter futures for themselves and their communities.
In addition, it is forbidden for girls and women in Afghanistan to go running outside in public spaces. This denial of a simple joy illustrates the brutality of the gender apartheid that girls continue to endure after five years of Taliban rule. We join the Denver Colfax Marathon to remind our scholars and each other that Afghan women and girls belong in running, and in the wider world, and that they are not forgotten. We run together for change, expanded opportunity, and solidarity.
