Kalasky used running to make a new life after gastric surgery, and now he uses what he has learned to help group members do the same. Several are running various Colfax Marathon events Sunday. Three months ago, there were five in his group — called Overweight to Endurance Athletes — and now there are 38.

If there’s one thing I learned from my first Boston Marathon last month, it was the true meaning of “Running Smart.” We hear the phrase a lot, but do we ever really pay attention to it? For the 116th running of the world’s oldest marathon, Running Smart wasn’t an option. Well, it was, but those 2,000+ folks who opted against it, found themselves in the medical tent afterwards.
Temperatures in the high 80’s are less than ideal for running a marathon. Race organizers began warning/scaring us three days prior to the event with phrases like: “Please consider deferring your entry,” “Drink more water than normal,” “Take longer walk breaks,” and the list went on. My husband urged me to run at least 10 minute mile. I didn’t. But I still ran smart and within my means.
I was able to average just over 9 minute miles and kept a steady pace throughout, even on the hills. I used a shammy-type towel to keep my shoulders and neck cool, I walked every aid station, stayed hydrated and nailed my nutrition for the first time ever. Nothing flared up injury wise during the run and I could actually walk around afterwards. I didn’t know how smart I ran until I witnessed the post-race “carnage.” I watched plenty of people stumble during the event but the scene afterwards was very scary and I was thankful not to be a part of it.
Could I have run faster? Absolutely. Could I have ended up in the medial tent if I had? Absolutely. I ran smart and realized more physical and mental ability than I ever thought I had.
It doesn’t have to be 87 degrees to run a smart race. Every race can be a smart race. Just tell yourself at 0.0 that you’re going to run smart and stick to it. I bet you’ll be surprised with the end result at 13.1 or 26.2.
Run safe, run hard and run smart.

GETTING TO THE CORE OF THE PROBLEM
by Meghan Dukes, DC, MSPT, Kaiser Permanente Centers for Complementary Medicine Chiropractic Physician
One of the most common questions I get from runners is which stretches they should be doing to keep their backs healthy. With all of the different muscle groups involved, everyone has a different idea of what works best. In a time when statistics show close to 85% of the population will experience back pain over the course of their lives, it doesn't surprise me that there is so much conflicting information floating around. By now, most of us are aware of the fact that keeping your core muscles strong is important to maintain a healthy back, but how does flexibility work into the equation?
The main function of our core is to keep our torsos balanced and stable with daily activities letting the bigger muscle groups in the arms and legs do the majority of the movement. When it comes to running, the big muscle groups we use most of the time are the quadriceps in the front of the thigh and the hamstrings in back. We’ve all seen the traditional stretches for these two areas, but to really keep our backs healthy with all levels of activity, we need to go a little deeper.
The smaller, deeper muscles of the hip are some of the most important to keep flexible with the strains of running. The largest of these, the Iliopsoas, or hip flexor, is one of the most frequently overlooked culprits when it comes to running related back pain. Without proper stretching of this area, it can tighten up when fatigued and put a lot of extra tension through the low back. A simple standing or kneeling lunge stretch does a good job of loosening up the front part of the hip and does wonders for taking stress off of the lumbar spine.
The other two muscles we can’t forget when it comes to a runner’s flexibility are the Gluteal muscles and the Tensor Fascia Latta (TFL). Both of these control rotation through the hips and can mimic both knee pain and sciatic-type leg pain when they get irritated. Standing or seated cross-legged stretches work really well for this region.
If static stretching isn’t your cup of tea; however, a great addition to any runner’s bag of tricks is a foam roller. Available at any sporting goods store, these simple tools do a great job at working out the short, deep muscles around the hips and low back. Most come with easy to follow pictures of how to best work on each muscle group keeping you loose and balanced through all phases of your training.

Get prepared for race day with these tips from Scott Poston, Fitness Director for the Denver Athletic Club.
Tip #1) Practice your start time. For marathoners that's 6:00am. So for your next long run get up early enough to eat your race day breakfast, go to the bathroom, etc. but start your long run at exactly 6:00am. What'll likely happen is that you'll be all ready to go by 5:15am and you'll have to wait around 45 minutes before starting your long run. That's the point! You need to experience the waiting period, the calm before the storm, so that on race day you're not weirded out by it.
Tip #2) You should practice carbo loading 2 days prior to your next long run. It works for most, but are you part of the majority? 70% of your calories should come from carbohydrates! Ya, that's a lot of carbs. And if done properly you'll even gain a few pounds during your carbo load (don't worry, the extra weight is water, which is required to store all the extra carbs). Plus, the weight will be gone by the time you finish your long run!
Tip #3) Try nothing new on race day! Everyone has told you this, and yet many of you will make this rookie mistake of the year. Plan your entire morning right now, and then try that exact routine before your next long run. It's ok to be a rookie, but you don't have to act like one.

John Prenguber might not be running in the Colfax Marathon this year but it’s not due to a lack of training discipline. John – one of the Colfax Marathon’s biggest supporters – will be at the finish line handing out medals and delivering inspiration across the three days of events.
John discovered the joys of running thirty years ago and has since completed nine marathons and 300-400 shorter races. John has had a hard road with his health due to complications from a football injury at just 15 years old. Doctors had to remove part of his pancreas, which led to diabetes and kidney failure years later. John has been on dialysis for the last 10 years getting nocturnal, or nighttime, treatments at DaVita Lonetree and in the last three years has had both legs amputated due to complications with diabetes.
For most people that would stop them in their running tracks – both literally and figuratively – but not John, and that is his most important message to others.
"I have no desire to sit in a corner and do nothing. I used to run, I'm going to run, and that's just the way it is," expressed John.
And that is what he is doing. John has run several races since losing both legs, including several half-marathons. He has a goal to complete one more full-marathon and continue to inspire other runners, people with disabilities and those with chronic conditions to keep living and being active, no matter the set-backs life throws your way.
“I see so many people who go on dialysis and act like life is over,” said John. “There is still so much they can do, that they need to do to be as healthy as they can be. Dialysis is what is keeping me alive and I want to take advantage of that gift every day.”
If you’re feeling down today or feeling like training for the Colfax Marathon is too much, think of John. Think of John getting up - tired from dialysis, strapping on his legs and going out for his run.
